Road Safety Education

Each spring, the Varano racetrack turns into a smart and exciting classroom. For about a month, the track hosts more than 70 boys and girls from Val Ceno who learn how to behave properly on the road in a fun way.

The initiative was founded by the Municipal Police and the municipal administration of Varano de’ Melegari. It is a completely free-of-charge course on road safety education for students ages 5 to 15 (from kindergarten to primary and secondary school). Students who participate in the course are able to build a strong culture of road safety.

At the end of the lecture cycle in the classroom, the kids ages 13 to 15 can attend a safe driving training in the paddock of the Varano de’ Melegari circuit. This is made possible by the company that manages the track, So.Ge.Sa.

Several volunteers take part in this course, including many members of the various police forces (municipal, provincial, road, rail, etc. ..), the Carabinieri and Fire Brigade.Dallara sponsors this project because it knows that safety cannot stop on the track; it must be a key element in driving on the road, especially for young generations.

Dallara works with the International Centre for Safe Driving to put on lessons that are both theoretical and practical. The subjects range knowledge of various safety components, both active and passive, to driving on a road route.

During the practical lessons on the track, the kids are properly equipped with helmets, protective jackets and gloves. While riding scooters they learn to navigate around cones, brake, go over bumps, pass through narrow passages, start uphill, drive around tight curves, and drive downhill. The Fire Brigade puts on simulations that teach students how car fires are extinguished and ambulance volunteers teach the first aid procedures that take place during accidents.

These courses are essential for educating young people about the value of road safety. Graduates of this course will adopt these high safety standards when they drive cars or scooters on their own.

The lessons are also important culturally and symbolically, as they introduce students to law enforcement officers not only as those who enforce traffic laws, but, above all, as qualified people who are willing to serve the community.
