What is CFD?

In the automotive sector, Computational Fluid Dynamics, otherwise known as CFD, is the aerodynamics branch that simulates tests in a virtual wind tunnel on a supercomputer. These tests, with the help of highly advanced numerical methods, solve the complex equations that govern the flow field around a car. In recent decades, this new science has made great progress. By refining the techniques and improving its tools, it has taken on a crucial role in the design and aerodynamic development of racecars, becoming a complementary and, in many ways, an irreplaceable tool, as opposed to the wind tunnel.

CFD at Dallara

At Dallara, our use of CFD in the aerodynamic design of our cars has been gradually increasing, justifying our investment in qualified personnel and state-of-the-art hardware technology. CFD is a valuable and extremely efficient tool that allows us to develop and test different configurations. This method is more efficient, both in time and cost, than wind tunnel testing, which requires the construction and installation of a model.

Furthermore, this tool allows the simulation of physical conditions and problems which are difficult, if not impossible, to reproduce in a classic wind tunnel. One example is the study of the thermal analysis. Thermal analysis helps us study variables from the cooling of brakes, to the heat under the bonnet of road cars, to acoustic aerodynamics, to comfort analysis of standard vehicles.

Dallara has invested greatly in qualified and skilled personnel, creating an area within the CFD department that is completely dedicated to research and development. This department designs and implements new tools that increase speed and performance. The CFD engineers involved in production work both on an area projects and on customer projects. The latter has recently increased significantly, signifying Dallara’s reliability and professionalism.
