Since the 80's Dallara has always understood the important potential of using composite materials in the Motorsport world. In 1985 Dallara made the first carbon fiber monocoques and in the following years the same technology was extended to the wings and bodywork.

Composite materials are fabrics made with carbon fiber or other synthetic reinforcement that have been impregnated with resin. This resin solidifies if it undergoes a particular pressure and heat treatment. The pieces made of composite materials, if the design is correct, are much lighter, stiffer and more resistant than those produced in metallic materials (such as steel, aluminium, etc.). Depending on the selected composite materials and the combinations of resins, fibers, matrices and stratifications, it is possible to obtain a wide spectra of mechanical properties. This manufacturing technique is more flexible and cheaper and is suitable not only for racing cars but also for the production of small series in the automotive and aeronautics area.

Dallara offers consultancy regarding composite materials, such as:

  •     Production technology and related processes
  •     Materials to be used, ply-books and appropriate baking cycles
  •     Time and cost for the production of components and manufacturing equipment
  •     Necessity for materials and possible equivalents
  •     Reparability and methodology of component repairs.

Dallara's activities on composites materials are organized into two distinct structures: Dallara Compositi in which 150 specialized technicians are involved in the engineering, production and quality control of the components (Dallara Stradale chassis, components for companies such as Ferrari, Bugatti, Toro Rosso, Ducati and Lamborghini,); and DARC (Dallara Advanced composite Research Center) in which resins, fibers and production technologies are studied, in order to establish the best solutions regarding weight, cost, resistance and stiffness required.
