For almost twenty years, we at Dallara have been studying the performance and behavior of vehicles with the help of “multi-body” codes. Technicians have access to a complete archive of suspension loads, kinematics, and other parameters of the vehicle. With this wealth of information, they are able to model an entire vehicle from the geometry and subsidence of the suspension, to the weight and moments of inertia, to aerodynamic coefficients, to the parameters of the tires.

Consequently, vehicle dynamics can predict the performance of the car with a high degree of accuracy, supporting the entire design process. Dallara has developed and optimized sophisticated methods to study the elasto-kinematics and to guide the behavior of a racecar, thus increasing its level of safety.

Simulations of Lap Time

Once the virtual model of the car has been completed, it is possible to carry out various simulations such as acceleration in a straight line, braking, changes of trajectory and “steering pad” (corner maneuvering with constant radius).

After having analyzed the data and evaluated the car’s performance under certain conditions, small adjustments are made and the final model is used to simulate the lap time. This process can be further developed and refined using the Dallara driving simulator.

Data Analysis

Simulation can never replicate exact reality. So, before reaching engineering conclusions about design parameters or performance set-up, it is important to check the underlying hypothesis.

For this reason, the results of the simulations are always verified and completed by experimental tests, in the laboratory, on the track, and on the road. Dallara uses professional data logging systems and takes great care in the validation and correlation of actual measurements with the simulation results. A continuously updated and enriched archive of sensors allows one to learn about any engineering characteristic.

The data collected on the track by telemetry allows us to adjust and improve our simulations to produce trends that are even more accurate and representative of reality. The data we collect serves as a basis to future improvements.
